“If a stripper gets breast implants can she write it off on her taxes as a business expense? Save money on your Tax Liability Bill!!

“If a stripper gets breast implants can she write it off on her taxes as a business expense?”  By definition she could, as she could be classified as “FREELANCER”. According to Freedicitionary.com, the meaning of freelancer is: A person who sells services to employers without a long-term commitment to any of them. In the case of a stripper, her commitment is what? an hour? It is definitely not a long-term gig.

What about you? Are you by definition a Freelancer? Or perhaps a small business owner? If the answer is yes, did you know that there are significant tax deductions available to self-employed people and small business owners? So what having significant Tax Deductions mean to you? It could mean that YOU could be saving $$money$$. (Try to save some money by following this tips)

So what is a Tax Deduction anyway? The definition of Business Expense is the cost incurred in order to run your business, is the cost of carrying on a trade or business. It needs to be “ordinary and necessary” for your trade and profession.   And trust me, “It's not hard to meet expenses, they're everywhere”. Tax Preparers   say  that as a self employed or as small business owner you need to keep track of every receipt because it could help with you with your TAX Liability.

So how does it work? For example, Lets say you pay about $ 1500 for 1 bedroom apartment  (it’s in a great area with a large walking closet and a huge living room), and you also decided to start an online business. You decided to sell Star Wars lunch boxes on eBay, since you hate traffic and the costs incurred in paying a storage facility for your merchandise is way too high, you decided to use your large walking closet and part of your living room as your storage facility, which by combining them both, they take about 30% of your rental.  So what happens in terms of Tax Deductions, well 30% of $ 1500 is $ 450, what this means you have $ 450 as Business Expense.- Add that to your Tax deductions tally. What about your Internet connection? This could also be counted as Business expense. Lets say that you are using 20% for the posting and uploading of pictures to eBay so you are able to execute a sale, for you and your online store, is the only way for you to carry your business and don’t forget to include part of your cell usage, car payments, oil change, tires, utilities, etc.   Interesting right?  Imagine how many things could have been helping you on your Tax liability bill if you had only been informed.

Also, as a Freelancer or small business owner, you should be issuing invoices or sign contracts with debtors as these documents suffice to prove the legal relationship. For instance, lets say one of your clients doesn’t pay. You could report your loss as a TAX deduction. If you are not putting your business relationships in writing, you should begin doing so immediately.

So going back to our Stripper’s implants question. Are her added “tools” for her line of work candidates for Tax Deduction? Well, technically the answer is yes, just ask  Chesty Love, who made Tax Law History when she successfully sued the IRS to take a $2,088 deduction on a boob job, under the basis that breast implants can be considered as a TAX DEDUCTION due to fashion wear.  But remember, one of the things that you need to keep in mind as you are adding your deductions tally is: Don’t FUCK with the IRS, however, that doesn’t mean you can’t be creative.

My best advice is when it comes to Taxes is best to understand all the rules before you take any action, better yet work with the professional.

Here are some deduction suggestions:

1.    Home office
2.    Furniture
3.    Capital Expenditures
4.    Start up expenses
5.    Software and subscriptions
6.    Hardware or other equipment
7.    Insurance Premiums
8.    Charity Donations
9.    Child labor
10. Retirement contributions
11. Social Security
12. Mileage
13. Telephone charges
14. Internet charges
15. Travel expenses
16. Entertainment and business gifts
17. Casualty losses
18. Fashion wear**

I bow to you Mr. Jon Harris, I think I am getting close to mastering "YOU"

http://www.dubberly.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/ddo_creative_process.jpg

The define yourself issue perhaps is one of the most difficult things for some of us when it comes to finding a creative style.   We all strive to be different in a world of trends as we look to establish our identity.  So how do we build our own style? Because according to some people "Everything has been said an done" and yes, I agree.  So as an artist  What do you do?  This is where "CONFIDENCE" plays a big role, as as an artist you have to believe that everything that you do has a meaning and relevance.  Creative style comes from years of trial and error. Every single artist borrows ideas from other artists, that is until they find their own essence.  So if you are in the business of telling stories you need to be able to experience: Everything that has been said and done until you find yourself.

Couple weeks ago, I went to see the movie 127 hours, starring James Franco. I am sure you have heard of it, but if you haven't, is the story of mountain climber Aron Ralston who finds himself trapped in an isolated canyon in Utah after boulder crashes on his arm. Amazing movie btw!! Something captivated me from this movie besides the intricate storytelling, what captivated me was the editing style and the sound design.   I was mesmerized through out the movie by the work of Mr. Jon Harris. I love how he played with the images, some people call it "THE GUY RITCHIE STYLE", but I say great job Mr. Harris.

I was definitely very inspired. I really wanted to emulate his style, but I simply could not find the right material until the opportunity knocked: a client with a music video.  This was an opportunity to apply this new concept and make it my own. 3 days later I had a very happy customer and I had learned a new style.  Anyhow, even though I am not at the point of setting new trends anytime soon,  I am just simply happy to say that I made the "127 hours " style my own. The name of the music video is "Party all the time" by Indigo.  Le me know what you think,  Perhaps you have something similar that you would like to share? Remember in the world of "Everything has been said an done"  I say, well "is not what you say, is how you say it"

When your job gets blown up

Lets face it .. The aftermath of you being laid off or fired sucks big time... I truly hate it. Being unemployed sucks ass, and if you are lucky enough to get unemployment benefits, well there are couple things that can make your new jobless life a little more miserable.  Besides the fact that you are now broke and perhaps couple checks from being homeless, Did you know that unemployment benefits are considered WAGE INCOME?  That means UNCLE SAM wants a fine piece of it.

Feeling miserable already? I totally agree with you if you are. Not only you are getting a dingy amount of money but also you still you have to give some that little money away. How crazy is that? What about your bills? What about saving your self from becoming homeless? However, experienced Tax Preparers always suggest you to consider deducting Taxes from your unemployment benefits check in order to avoid unexpected radical whore sum on April 15 as your tax bill arrives.  How you do it? Well depends on your State, in California, the unemployment benefits office gives you the option to choose how much taxes you want to be withheld from your check. Usually, taxes are withheld at a rate of 10 percent for each unemployment payment.

It is always best to be prepared to avoid any possible more stressful situations. Plan wise.

A "FREELANCER" IS BORN: A “FREELANCER” IS BORN

I just saved myself from paying a fine of $2000 to the city of Los Angeles.

I realized that I was a true artist the day that I decided to become a Freelancer, besides being a creative person myself, the thought of working in the same place with the same people for a number of years became a big stressor for me. Picturing a life where I am sitting in the same office cubicle for the next 20 years and working 9 to 5, it is something out of a horror movie.  That life is not for me.  I am adventurous, and curious; I am free spirited and I love new experiences.  Experiences make you grown and learn; they are essence of life that is worth living. So I made up my mind about changing my life and I made a decision: I decided to become my own boss; I became a FREELANCER.
Being my own boss( 6 tips in being your own boss) has allowed me to fulfill my potential as a professional as well as a creative artist.  It has provided me with the professional growth by forcing me to become more proactive and diligent in the pursuit of my professional goals. I definitely have to say that being a freelancer has a lot of benefits such as: having your own hours, your own space, you are FREE from all the office bullshit, and most importantly you are your own boss. How great is that?
But remember,  “With great power there comes great responsibility” if you are not properly advised, your life of independence can turn  into a nightmare, especially when it comes to taxes. Even if you feel the need to do your own taxes you can still benefit from a one-time consultation. Tax laws are constantly changing from time to time and are quite difficult to understand. It is necessary to involve the services of a tax consultant in the preparation of files and make your business and personal taxes.

Are you unemployed? Check how you can benefit from a Tax consultant

This can be of great help to avoid any mistakes in your accounting period that you could get in trouble with the tax authorities.   Like for instance, I just saved myself from paying a fine of $2000 to the city of Los Angeles. For real!
The basterds had already sent me to collections with penalties of 40%.  According to them, I had been evading taxes for the last four years, since I work in the “Film Industry”, they had estimated my annual income in the range of $ 240,000’s  (Yeah, I wish!!!).  I had this battle over the phone that lasted for 4 months. It was a fruitless battle between collection agency and me. Finally, through a friend I got the tax help and advice that I needed. Anyhow, all this crap was unnecessary and could have been avoided, had I been properly advised in the first place.
Believe me as a freelancer your life is often everything but simple. Juggling invoices, rough schedules, clients, overload of work etc., it is a total different world when you are flying solo.  That’s why I suggest you to have a guide, a professional guide to avoid any potential tax problems.  In the world of freelancers, whether you are an writer, editor, animator, compositor, designer, actor or simply your own boss: it is always necessary to have a trained professional tax preparer that will manage your taxes and leaving you confident and assured that you will not face the IRS alone. Especially when you received an unexpected IRS Audit Letter. It could scary and perhaps you may go into PANIC mode. All that terminology, deadlines and paperwork. You just want to shit in your pants.
But as I write this I perhaps tend to generalize, not all certified tax preparers are created equal. Even though the IRS expects reputable tax prepares you may find  that like in any other professions, that is not always the case and that amongst taxes preparers there also exists a wide range of bad tax practitioners (Examples of Abusive Return Preparers). Remember, no matter what your tax preparer says or does, you are ultimately responsible for the accuracy of your tax returns. The IRS will hold you, and only you, accountable.  And just before you decide on a Tax preparer:
·      Make sure to check credentials
·      Always verify the IRS website ( check for any disciplinary actions towards your potential tax preparer)
·      Recommendations ( Word of mouth from friends, colleagues or family members can be a good resource)
·      Check for References

The idea of you hiring a tax preparer or tax consultant is too make your life easier. Make sure to follow these tips as your find yourself darting to your perfect world of freedom.
